BIO:
Latin/World music group Bomba is a collaborative of musicians
with a striking diversity of cultural backgrounds, dedicated
to exploring the rhythms and grooves from across the Americas.
Taking different routes to the same destination, these
players from different heritages all landed in Edmonton and coalesced to share
one musical vision. Drummer Mario Allende, bassist Rubim de Toledo from Brazil, keyboardist Chris Andrew is from
Edmonton.
The autumn of 2001 brought with it the change that fully
realized Bomba, when esteemed percussionist Israel “Toto” Berriel relocated from
Matanzas, Cuba to Calgary, Alberta.
As Bomba did with their debut release, ‘Lo Que Bomba te
Dá’ (what Bomba gives you) they recorded, mixed, and produced their second album
‘A Mi Me Gusta’ (I like it) by themselves.
These musical adventurers span an astonishingly wide
array of evocative styles on this new recording. Bomba is a new generation of
musicians well schooled in traditional Latin music forms from timba to rumba, to
son, to salsa, to songo, as well as North American funk and jazz. Dexterously
versatile, their musical transculturalization has led to many very interesting
fusions and innovative forms of expression.
Bomba’s lively, lusty love affair with Latin music is
evidenced by their live shows. The band’s irresistible dance rhythms and
alluring grooves never fail to bring audiences to their feet, and keep them
moving.
Live and on record, Bomba perform artfully, imaginatively,
and with conviction.
