SCAM ALERT! Scammer contacts ETOWN SALSA
|
|
When I first received this email, it sounded too good to be true. When I got this email, I was in a rush so I quickly replied that I would provide a quote at a later time as I was heading out. After reading this email repeatedly , I started becoming very suspicious of the information he was asking for. Who asks for a POS machine? As I am writing this blog, I also noticed that the scammer changed text font for my name , which means this guy has been cutting and pasting his content repeatedly. The crazy thing is that these phishing scams are much more sophisticated than before. These guys actually are taking the time to find their victims through company websites and finding the nature of their business and using that to execute their scam . The bad thing is that I can really see how it can fool the victim at first. Luckily I have alot of experience with catching these sorts of Phishing emails but I want to warn any other companies of this sort of scam. Please investigate your client, especially if they are giving as much information and details as the following email:

NOTE: Below is an email recently sent that requested ETOWN SALSA to transact 10k for a stolen credit card of which will go through. The client will then want ETOWN SALSA to send a money order or similar to the translator for the sum of $8600 and the remainder for ETOWN SALSA to keep as a deposit. ETOWN SALSA will later receive a phone call from the credit card company to the effect that ETOWN SALSA did not have a signed credit card slip signed by the real credit card holder and so now ETOWN SALSA would then owe 10k to the credit card company. The scammer then gets off scotch free with $8600 USD.
Hello [undisclosed recipient]
Thanks for the reply. Not that I am no Ok with paypal. I am not just ready to use it now. I prefer sending my credit card to you. I am a very busy person and would soon be leaving for Iran. I will send my credit card details to you before I leave. Do you have the PoS in your office? But before I send the card details I will need you to kindly note the following information before we proceed with the arrangement. The credit card would be sent to you alongside an authorization letter.
I will make a deposit of $1,500 usd as our initial payment. I did inform you that we have Greeks in the group and they understand more of Greek. Therefore, they would need an interpreter. I have arranged this with a linguist who is willing to undertake these responsibilities on our behalf. He would be with them throughout the Greek visitors during the lessons. I have been instructed to pay you for your services and that of the language translator via the credit card. I will send you my credit card details when I receive your confirmation email so that you would charge as agreed/authorized by the group.
However because of security reasons, the fact that you will have the PoS installed soon, confidentiality reposed on you and because the translator do not have credit card facility I have decided that only YOU will have to handle my credit card information. So, once you receive the credit card information, you will be authorized to charge the total amount of {$10,100 USD} then deduct the deposit of {$1,500 USD} as my initial payment. While you send the balance of {$8,600 USD} to the translator whose information will be forwarded to you once the charges are made and confirmed. I really need you to make the charges for the translator as he does not have a PoS machine and would the money as his own deposit so as to proceed with our flights and other logistics. You are also to deduct the processing fees and taxes involved in processing this amount.
PLEASE CONFIRM IF THIS ARRANGEMENT IS OK AND REPLY PROMPTLY TO ENABLE US PROCEED.
NOTE: I need you to confirm that ONLY you will handle the credit card details.(As soon as I have the flight and the accommodation details I would forward them to you). I can as well need your help. Is there any 3 star hotel around? We would be happy if you could book 3 double rooms for us plus a single for the translator.
Regards
Fredrick Mark
